As a Theatre Arts concentrator in the TAPS (Theatre Arts and Performance Studies) department, I am required to do a capstone project. This to be honest initially stuck me as a gigantic pain in the arse! (Senior year! Are you kidding???) That was however before I realized that I could actually use this as an opportunity - a huge one. I am now actually using the project to speak to people who are already doing what I want to be doing in New York next year... which I am really excited about, as I'm learning so much! This is my capstone idea:
My capstone examines the network among artists in the theatre business in New York. It seeks to understand how people, connections, and collaboration can shape an artists journey... a colloquial way of phrasing it could be that this project will examine the notion of “the six degrees of Kevin Bacon”. It focuses on how it is that the interactions among individuals can alter or project artistic careers. Instead of starting with one nexus – such as Kevin Bacon however, I'm starting with multiple individuals from differing backgrounds within the theatre community, from whom I can initiate my research. Through my interactions I will seek to find out my interviewee's story: what led them to their current position, what their access point into the industry was, and who the individuals were that shaped their career paths. Trying to absorb all I can from them for my own benefit, I also plan to conduct a series of subsequent interviews with the people that were influential in their journeys. I will build an online Prezi (check out www.prezi.com for cool online tools) diagram, showing the web I create from one referral to another. By the end of the project I should have an online diagram mimicking the network of artists in the theatre community, a better understanding of how networking works in New York, and a whole bunch of new contacts of people who are similarly invested in the things that I love. Soooo excited to see what comes of this!
